Let’s say you build a great product and invest all your time and effort into making it the best. However, you do not spread the word about this great product and no one knows about it! What’s the use? So, just as you need to let others know about your product and get recommendations from them, you need to do off-page optimization for your site as well.
Directory submission, Article submission, Blog commenting and Forum posting etc. These would be the major aspects in link building.

Which one is the best (for SEO). And also would there be any harm or benefit in using both of them on the same page just to really make sure it is working?

Your question isn’t detailed enough to give you the right answer.
Canonical is used for pages that have the exact same content to help you from getting penalized. You point the canonical tag to the authoritative version (unsorted perhaps) of the page.
301 is a page permanently moved redirect, if that helps.
